The Christian County defense did Saturday night what only one other team had done this season. The Colonels held Lyon County to under 70 points in their game at Hopkinsville High School in the City of Hopkinsville Holiday Classic.
The problem for the Colonels was that Lyons also play defense and played it pretty well. The state’s top-ranked team showed it can also win when it has to play a slowed-down, physical, grind-it-out game as Lyon County muscled its way past Christian County 66-49.
The game was a physical affair from the beginning with that intense physical play leading to some intense moments on the court and along the sideline.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going early. Lyon County, which has had lightning starts from behind the 3-point line, did not have its deep shooting eye in the first half, knocking down just one shot from behind the arc in the first sixteen minutes of the game.
Christian County led much of the first quarter and held a 16-14 lead when that quarter came to an end.
Ignited by Travis Perry and Brady Shoulders, Lyon County opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run, taking a 24-18 lead and leaving most in the crowd wondering if the Lyons were about to drop one of their patented lightning-fast big runs.
But give the Christian County Colonels their due, they were not about to go down without a fight against the two-time defending 2nd Region champions. Getting some big plays from Jordan Miles and JaSean Riley, Christian County diffused the run and kept the margin to four points at 30-26 going into the break.
While Travis Perry was well on his way to a typical Travis Perry kind of night, it was UT-Martin-bound Brady Shoulders who turned the tide for Lyon County in the second half.
Led by the big senior, Lyon County opened the second half on a 15-5 run, moving the lead out to 14 points at 45-31. The Lyon County lead was still at 14 points when the quarter ended at 48-34.
The Lyons pushed the lead out to 17 points early in the final quarter and that would be where the margin was at the end of the night.
Brady Shoulders had a monster second-half, scoring 16 points in the final two quarters. The Lyons needed those points as Christian County’s Derrell Bateman was a force inside for the Colonels, putting up 19 points in the second half.
For the night, Brady Shoulders led Lyon County with 24 points. Travis Perry was right behind him with 23. Jack Reddick finished with 12 points and battled cramps coming down to the finish of the game.
Christian County’s Derrell Bateman led all scorers in the game with 27 points. Jordan Miles was the only other Colonel to hit double figures with 10.
Lyon County improves to 15-1 with their 12th straight win. The Lyons open play in the boys’ 2nd Region All A Classic Tuesday night at Crittenden County.
Christian County falls to 6-8. The Colonels hit the road Tuesday to take on Henderson County.
