Trigg County hit its magic number of 60 on Tuesday and hit a season-high in points as they held off Hopkins County Central 80-77 in Morton’s Gap.
The win was Trigg’s third straight over the Storm and its first at Hopkins Central since 2015. Trigg’s win also evened the all-time series between the schools at 13-13.
The Wildcats hit 59% from the field and turned a 10-point first half deficit into a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Trigg County also moved to 6-0 when scoring 60 or more points.
The Wildcats were without the services of coach Mason Burgett, who was with his father, former Trigg coach Chad Burgett who was hospitalized in the ICU with pneumonia.
Matthew Reeves, Charles Terrell, and Blake Mize shared Tuesday’s coaching duties and watched the Wildcats turn the basketball over eight times in the first quarter and fall behind 19-11.
Trigg County came back in the second quarter thanks to a 12 of 14 performance at the free throw line. It was a stark contrast to the team’s season average of 55%.
The Wildcats used a 19-2 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to lead 68-56 with 6:12 left as the Storm went nearly four minutes without a point.
Sophomore Davonyae Butcher almost single-handedly led a Hopkins Central comeback in the fourth quarter. He scored 13 of his 27 points in the game’s final six minutes. He hit consecutive 3-pointers in the final minute with the latter cutting Trigg’s lead to 79-77 with 22 seconds left.
Jhaden Vaughn hit one of two free throws to push the lead back to three, and Hopkins Central missed four shots in the final 15 seconds as the Wildcats held on for the win.
Vaughn finished with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists for the Wildcats, while Davaree Gude added 20 points. Jermimyah Shearer joined them in double figures with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and six steals.
After Trigg’s troublesome first quarter, they committed just five turnovers in the final three quarters.
Trigg hit 19 of 27 at the free throw line to counterbalance 12 three-pointers from Hopkins Central.
Hopkins Central (5-10) will host Caldwell County on Tuesday for a district game.
Trigg County (6-7) will travel to Union County on Friday and then play three straight district games.
