After taking one in the grill Saturday afternoon to neighborhood rival Christian County, you could figure the University Heights Academy Blazers would be in a dour mood and come out a bit focused and energized as the Fort Campbell Falcons came calling at Blazer Gym. And, that is pretty much what happened.
Kickstarted by Matthew Hauret’s three just a minute into the game, the Blazers scored the first 30 points of the game and rolled to a 64-18 win over the Falcons. UHA pitched a shutout in the first quarter, taking a 25-0 lead after the first eight minutes of the game.
UHA’s pressure defense made it difficult on the Falcons to get the ball into their halfcourt offense, and when they could, the Blazers rejected a significant number of their shots over the early part of the game.
The Blazers scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a 30-0 lead. Fort Campbell ended the drought just over two minutes into the second quarter on a basket from J.P. Perryman.
UHA would finish the half outscoring the Falcons 10-6 to take a 42-8 lead into the break.
Coming out of the half, it did not take UHA long to get the game into running clock mode. A steal and layup from Kyler Baker just 10 seconds into the half made it a 44-8 game and started the running clock for the rest of the game.
Baker’s layup was the first of 16 straight points for the Blazers to open the second half, extending the lead out to 58-8. From that point, reserves for the Blazers saw most of the action for the rest of the game.
The lead was 60-12 at the end of the third quarter.
Four Blazers finished the night in double figures. Quinton Quarles, Matthew Hauret, and Gavin Grubbs had 12 points each. Elijah Walton added 10 points for UHA.
J.P. Perryman was the top scorer for Fort Campbell with 5 points. Lashaud Smiley chipped in with 4 points for the Falcons.
With the win, UHA improves to 16-5 on the season. The Blazers get right back to action Tuesday night as they hit the road westward for a game against Ballard Memorial.
For the Falcons, they drop to 5-11. They are now off until Thursday night when they have another 8th District matchup at Christian County.
