Monday’s 5th District basketball battle between Trigg County and Crittenden County resembled more of a MASH unit than a hoops battle. Both teams combined had nearly 60 points per game sitting on the bench with various injuries.
But in the end, Trigg County closed the game on an 11-2 run to beat the Rockets 63-52. The Wildcats hit eight of eleven shots from the field to close out the district win.
Trigg County’s Landon Stewart got off to a fast start, scoring the team’s first 14 points of the game, but the Wildcats could never get separation from the Rockets in the first half, leading 16-11 after one quarter and 27-23 at halftime.
In the second half, Caleb Fogle provided the scoring punch for Trigg, with a trio of three-pointers and finished with a career-high 15 points. He was one of three Wildcats to score in double figures, joining Stewart and Jerimyah Shearer, who messed around and nearly got a triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists.
The Wildcats played without Jhaden Vaughn and Davaree Gude, the team’s two leading scorers, due to injury.
Bryson Walker led Crittenden County with 22 points. The sophomore guard has had a much-needed breakthrough season for the Rockets who have dealt with the loss of last year’s leading scorer Travis Champion who is out for the year with a knee injury.
Jonah Reddick joined Walker in double figures with 13 points and five rebounds.
Trigg County outrebounded Crittenden 30-23 and got 14 points off its bench.
The Wildcats improved to 10-1 this season when scoring 60 or more points.
While the Wildcats got its third straight win over Crittenden County, the outcome does not affect seeding for the postseason district tournament.
Entering Tuesday’s game with Lyon County, Trigg County will be the number two seed and play Livingston Central in the semifinals of the district tournament. Crittenden County will be the fourth seed and take on top seed Lyon County.
The Wildcats and Lyons meet Tuesday night for a district doubleheader at Wildcat Gym.
