Various University of Kentucky athletes will be involved in projects with the Scott County Humane Society this weekend with the goal of helping match folks with dogs/cats who need a home.
On Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at Total Wine Hamburg in Lexington volleyball players Erin Lamb, Eleanor Beavin and Emma Grome along with soccer player Hadley Williams will be joined by football players Dylan Ray, Anthony Brown and Jordan Lovett along with plenty of dogs.
Volleyball player Megan Wilson will be at PetSmart Hamburg at the same time with cats.
On Sunday from noon-2 p.m. at Feeder’s Supply on Richmond Rd. in Lexington Lamb, Beavin and Williams will be back along with Ray and teammate Alex Raynor with the dogs again to meet and greet fans.
The recently former W1974 Collective was created to support all female student-athletes at UK have greater access to NIL opportunities, networking and professional development. Opportunities like those this weekend are part of that.
While NIL revenue has been a bonanza for many male athletes, the economics even for the best female athletes has not been nearly the same. The W1976 Collective is trying to change that and is open to any UK female student-athlete to join.
Recently I saw where UK softball players spent time at Operation Making A Change in downtown Lexington mentoring kids with a question-and-answer session about working through disabilities, how to focus on keeping grades up, when to start thinking about scholarships, and how to stay disciplined in life and sports.
