Christian County ruled the paint and owned the glass as they handed Trigg County a 72-23 defeat on Friday at Lyle Dunbar Gymnasium.

The Lady Colonels outscored Trigg 52-12 in the paint and outrebounded the Lady Wildcats 54-29. Christian County had 29 offensive rebounds and grabbed the rebound on 60 percent of their own missed shots. That led to 23 second-chance points.

Trigg’s season-long quandary – turnovers – weren’t its major undoing on Friday. Missed shots were. Trigg shot 17 percent from the field and found the paint challenging against the Lady Colonel’s defense. Christian County blocked eight Trigg shots and the Lady Wildcats hit just 6 of 25 shots in the paint.

Already up 34-11 at halftime, the Lady Colonels hit 13 of 22 shots in the third quarter and outscored Trigg 29-6 to trigger the running clock.

NaVaeh Day was the biggest beneficiary for the Lady Colonels with an 18-point, 18-rebound night. Lazarie Daniel added 15 points and seven rebounds, and DaNiya Bradley came off the bench to score seven points and grab seven rebounds.

Anaysia Bagwell, Christian County’s leading scorer at 18 points a game, scored half that as the sophomore guard battled first half foul trouble. She did have a team-high four steals.

Evonna McGee led Trigg County in scoring for the second straight game, scoring nine points. Eighth graders Veyda Grinols and A.J. Navarro each scored five points and grabbed five rebounds.

Christian County has won 13 straight games against Trigg dating back to 1996 and leads the all-time series 31-4.

Christian County has won nine straight games for the first time in six years. They stand at 15-8 ahead of Saturday’s game at Webster County.

Trigg County, meanwhile, has dropped 13 straight games, equaling the second-longest in program history. The good news is that math will preclude them from breaking the single-season school record of 21 straight set in 2012-13.

The Lady Wildcats will play at Graves County on Monday.
