Less than five years ago, Fort Campbell put just a handful of swimmers in the pool at the Region I Swim Meet. Fast forward to the present and the Falcon swimmers are putting hardware in the trophy case.
Fort Campbell finished as region runner-up and will send six swimmers and two relay teams to the KHSAA state first round this week.
The Falcons’ 320 points were 55 points behind region champion Murray and nine points ahead of third-place Madisonville.
The Falcons had a pair of region champions in Brody Sharp (100-yard backstroke) and Jonah Weisbrich (100-yard breaststroke). The duo also was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that came from third place with a leg to go to winning the region title.
The KHSAA tweaked the format for the state swim meet for the third time in four years. There are three sites for the state first round with Regions 1-3 swimming at Russell County High School on Saturday. The top three finishers in each event will then advance to the KHSAA State Swimming Championships presented by UK Healthcare on Feb. 23-24 in Lexington.
