The Trigg County Wildcats had it in their grasp late in the game but a strong closing effort from the Ballard Memorial Bombers took it away. The Bombers outscored Trigg 9-2 over the final two minutes to take a hard-fought 60-55 home-court win Friday night.
The late rally from the Bombers came after Trigg County had taken a 53-51 lead with two minutes left in the game.
The game was a back-and-forth contest from the beginning with both teams having their moments throughout the course of the night.
The Bombers led 11-8 after one quarter and extended that out to 25-19 at the half.
Ballard looked to have things going its way as the Bombers were able to work their way to a six point lead at 39-33 heading into the final eight minutes of the night.
The Wildcats came roaring out to start the final quarter and pulled even with the Bombers at 44-44 with just under six minutes left in the game.
The Bombers got back to the lead only to see Trigg County comeback and pull in front with 2 minutes left, but it would turn out to be the Bombers that had enough in the tank to close out and secure the win.
Jace Birney came up huge for Ballard Memorial late in the game, scoring 17 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter.
The win ended a seven-game losing streak for Ballard Memorial.
Trigg County drops to 10-16 with the loss. The Wildcats go back on the road Monday night to take on Union County.
