It happened again Saturday night and it left the Adair County Indians looking for the license plate number of the truck that just ran them over. The Indians were the latest team to experience what it was like to be on the receiving end of a Lyon County blitz as the Lyons routed Adair County 98-48 on Senior Night in Jason White Gym.
The Indians had things going the way they wanted in the early going. Whether it was the Adair County defense or the carryover from Senior Night ceremonies that often hits teams at the beginning of the game, the Indians were able to get the pace of the game slowed down enough to take a 16-14 lead after the first quarter.
Isaiah Cochran and Dawson Gilbert combined to score 11 points for Adair County in the opening quarter as it looked as if the Lyons might have a game-long battle on their hands.
Then, with Lyon County holding a narrow one-point lead at 23-22 early in the second quarter, it happened again. Not just any old run, but a run that oftentimes will take the will of the opponent and just grind it into the ground.
Over the rest of the second quarter, the Lyons outscored Adair County 17-1 to run away to a 40-23 halftime lead. Travis Perry scored ten in the second quarter and Jack Reddick added eight more as Lyon County effectively settled the issue, and if it truly was not settled then, it would be very, very soon.
Back-to-back threes from Perry and Reddick to open the second half kicked off a 14-2 run for Lyon County that took the margin to 29 points at 54-25 and the game was over long before the final seconds would tick off the scoreboard.
During the run that obliterated any hopes that Adair County had of coming to Eddyville and picking up a win over a Top 5 team, the Lyons had outscored the Indians 31-3. The lead grew to 35 late in the third quarter, bringing the running clock into play and speeding up the rest of the evening. The third quarter ended with the Lyons up 77-36.
Reserves saw most of the action over the final eight minutes of the game for Lyon County. However, The Three Amigos of Perry, Shoulders, and Reddick re-entered for a short stretch to enable them to receive their Senior Night sendoff as they checked out of the game one more time. It was not their final game in Jason White Gym as the Lyons have two home games next week, plus the 5th District tournament, which will be played this year at Lyon County.
Travis Perry finished the night with 30 points. Jack Reddick had another big game, just one night after he had to get seven stitches above his right eye, with 23 points. Brady Shoulders added 21.
Isaiah Cochran led Adair County with 13 points, despite fouling out with four minutes left in the third quarter. Connor Loy was the other Indian to reach double figures with 12 points.
Lyon County goes to 25-3 with the win. The Lyons are back in action Tuesday as they kick off the final week of the regular season by hosting Dawson Springs.
