PREVIEW – Christian County and Hopkinsville Appear Headed for Collision in Girls 8th District Tourney

day-2

Christian County has been the hottest girls team in the 2nd Region over the finish of the regular season and would appear to be the favorite to cut down the nets as the 8th District tournament gets underway Tuesday night. The question for the week appears to be can the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers get in their way of claiming the title.

This year’s tourney is being played at Christian County High School.

With University Heights not competing in girls’ basketball this season, the 8th District girls’ tournament is a four-team affair, while the guys have five teams battling for the district title.

The girls’ semifinals are being played Tuesday night with the first game to tip off at 6pm. Christian County (16-8), which has won 11 straight and 13 of its last 14, is the top seed and will take on 4th-seeded Fort Campbell (4-16). The Lady Colonels easily won the only meeting between the two teams this season, taking an 86-12 decision over the Lady Falcons on February 8.

The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers, who are seeded second in the tournament, have been playing much better as of late, and come in on a winning streak of their own. Hopkinsville (9-9) has won four straight and five of six heading into the week. If you want to play the ‘who beat who game’, the Lady Tigers picked up a nice win over Crittenden County, the same Crittenden County team that beat Madisonville, who in turn beat Christian County earlier in the season.

Hopkinsville takes on 3rd-seeded Heritage Christian Academy (1-17) in the second game Tuesday night. The Lady Warriors claimed the third seed by their win earlier this season over Fort Campbell. Hopkinsville rolled past Heritage in their only meeting this season, an 87-11 win on February 3rd.

Last year, Christian County cruised to the district title winning their two games by an average of 43 points.

The two winners in Tuesday night’s semifinals will meet Friday evening at 6pm for the 8th District championship.
