The start of each half was kind to Lyon County and proved to be the undoing of Trigg County as the Lady Lyons moved into the championship of the 5th District Tournament with an 80-31 win on Monday.

Playing on their home court, the Lady Lyons jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first four minutes before Trigg’s A.J. Navarro scored a bucket to end the run.

Navarro scored nine of Trigg’s 13 first quarter points and helped the Lady Wildcats get to within 26-17 early in the second quarter.

Jenna Coursey began a 10-0 Lyon run with a bucket at the 6:33 mark as Trigg went the rest of the quarter without a field goal.

Lexi Holland’s running 3-pointer ahead of the halftime horn gave the Lady Lyons a 43-22 lead at the break.

Just like they did to start the game, the Lady Lyons used a quick start – this time a 16-0 run to build a 59-22 lead and trigger the running clock.

Lyon County shot 65 percent from the field in the second half in outscoring Trigg County 37-9. The Lady Lyons finished 33 of 54 from the floor for a 61 percent shooting clip.

The Lady Wildcats hit just 3 of 19 shots in the second half and shot 22 percent from the field.

Two key statistical areas keyed Lyon County’s win. They scored 35 points off 23 Trigg turnovers and outscored Trigg 52-12 in the paint.

Piper Cotham paced four Lady Lyons in double figures with 23 points and nine steals. In three games against Trigg County this season, Cotham has scored 62 points and registered 27 steals.

Trinity Taylor added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Lyons, and Gracen Wynn and Lexi Holland each scored 13 points.

Navarro was the lone Lady Wildcat to score in double figures with 16 points. Evonna McGee scored seven points and Alivia Norwood scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Both teams were playing without their leading rebounders – Trigg’s Veyda Grinols and Lyon’s Courtney Collins – due to injury.

Lyon County improved to 14-7 all-time against Trigg in the district tournament and has won seven of 10 in the series.

Trigg County finishes the season with a 3-25 record and a 17-game losing streak.

Lyon County improved to 20-9 – the program’s first 20-win season since 2016. The Lady Lyons will play Crittenden County in the district championship on Thursday. The Lady Rockets beat Livingston Central 52-44 in the other semifinal.
