Tuesday’s 5th District semifinal matchup between Trigg County and Livingston Central proved to be a game of seizing opportunities.

Both teams played without their leading scorers due to injury but it was Trigg County that adjusted better in claiming a 73-48 win over the Cardinals to move into Friday’s championship game against Lyon County.

Trigg County learned on Monday that Jhaden Vaughn (17 pts, 11 reb.) would be out with a knee injury suffered in the Friday win over Todd County Central.

Livingston Central was without Logan Wring (23 pts, 12 reb.) who had an injured hand.

Both teams appeared flummoxed early although Livingston Central moved out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter.

One player who has seized his opportunity has been Caleb Fogle. The Wildcat junior moved into the starting lineup after nearly doubling his season-scoring average in February. He scored 10 straight points for Trigg and gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 20-19 with 3:13 left in the second quarter.

Trigg’s pressure defense caused issues for Livingston, who turned the ball over nine times in the second quarter that led to 15 Trigg points and a four-point lead at the break.

In the third quarter, eighth grader Timmy Williams stepped up for Trigg and scored six points and grabbed three rebounds as the Wildcats closed with an 11-2 run and a 49-34 lead.

Trigg County led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter with senior Peyton Moore scoring the final four points for the Wildcats.

Meanwhile, Brady Stone seized his opportunity for the Cardinals and provided the inside presence magnified with the void of Wring in the middle.

The 6-6 junior, who entered Tuesday averaging three points and two rebounds, scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds – both team highs – and blocked six shots.

Drew Hosick added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Fogle led Trigg with 15 points, and Jerimyah Shearer added 13 points. Williams scored 10 points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.

Trigg scored 29 points off 21 Livingston turnovers in outscoring the Cardinals 48-27 in the second half. The Wildcats improved to 11-4 when scoring 60 points.

Trigg County will play Lyon County for the district championship on Friday at 6:00 in Eddyville.
