Recent 5th District Champion Coaches Honored

The last three 5th District coaches to win a region championship were honored at Tuesday’s district tournament in Eddyville.

Trigg County coaches Jim Wallace and Mike Wright and Lyon County coach Ryan Perry were recognized.

Wallace coached the 1969-70 Wildcats to the school’s first region title, which included a win over Hopkinsville and “Bird” Averitt in the championship game. Trigg County won two games at Freedom Hall before falling to Richmond Madison in the Sweet 16 semifinals.

Wright coached the 1996-97 Wildcats to the region championship with a high-scoring offense that still holds the region record at 90 points a game. Trigg County lost to Corbin in the first round of the Sweet 16.

Perry has guided the Lyons to back-to-back region championships and the school’s first-ever first-round wins at the Sweet 16,

Other 5th District coaches to win region titles are Livingston Central’s Frank Wright in 1959, Princeton Dotson’s Jerry Withrow in 1963, and Caldwell County’s George Perry in 1964.
