
University Heights Academy has its first indoor track and field state champion.
Griffin McCoy claimed the triple jump title at the Class A State Track and Field Indoor Championships in Louisville on Sunday.
McCoy’s first jump of the day – 42 feet, 10.5 inches – was his best and earned him the state title by nearly a foot-and-a-half over second place James Cusick of Beechwood.
The UHA junior took third place at the state outdoor meet last year.
McCoy also finished in sixth place in the 60-meter dash in 7.29 seconds.
Clayton Lester was sixth in the 400-meter dash in 52.77 seconds.
Logan Miller took 11th in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.59 seconds.
Aaron Onate was 11th in the shot put in 41-10.50.
Jayden Hunt was 16th in the 60-meter dash in 7.46 seconds.
The 1600-meter relay team of Lester, Hunt, McCoy, and Ryan Luckey came in sixth place in 3:39.31.
As a team, UHA totaled 19 points to finish in ninth place. Green County won the state title with 76 points, edging Beechwood by a point.
For the girls, Skylar Cantrell was 10th in the 800-meter run in 2:37.94.
Kendall Hancock was 14th in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.63.
Ajae Oatts was 18th in the 60-meter dash in 8.69 seconds.
Sunday’s state meet was the first indoor state championship sanctioned by the KHSAA. The outdoor track and field season begins later this month.
