Henderson County Earns Regional Semifinal Trip with 66-49 Win Over Trigg County

The Trigg County Wildcats entered this year’s boys’ 2nd Region tournament hoping to complete what they nearly pulled off last season. During the 2023 tourney in Madisonville, the Wildcats closed to within 3 points in the second half before falling by 10 points to the Henderson County Colonels in the quarterfinals.

Forward the clock to 2024, and the same two teams were meeting in the same round of the tournament, this time at Hopkinsville High School. However, Alec Satterfield and the rest of the Henderson County Colonels were able to avoid any second-half scare.

Led by Satterfield’s 23 points, the Colonels took a 10-point lead late in the first half and never led by less than that margin the rest of the way as Henderson County ended Trigg County’s season 66-49.

The Wildcats opened the game focused on not letting Cooper Davenport beat them and they were successful, for the most part, with that plan. Trigg County had a chaser on Davenport all night long and held the Colonels’ leading scorer to 13 points, keeping him from being a deciding factor in the game.

The problem for the Wildcats was that Alec Satterfield stepped up into the gap and made sure the Colonels would not be the victim of an opening-round upset.

Trigg County took an early 7-3 lead in the game, but the lead was shortlived. Henderson County, sparked by Max Thompson, came back with a 10-1 run and went in front 13-8. The Colonels would not trail for the rest of the game. Henderson County led 13-11 after the first eight minutes of the night.

Early in the second quarter, Trigg County cut the lead to 15-14 and you began to think that maybe, just maybe. But then again, maybe not. Henderson County finished the half with a 14-3 run and it was effectively game, set, and match.

Trigg County would close to within 10 points in the third quarter at 37-27, but that was it for the rally. Henderson took a 44-32 lead into the final quarter.

Still, in the back of your mind, there was that thought if the Wildcats could get hot, there was still that chance. Jerimyah Shearer and Landon Stewart had knocked down some threes and they still had Jhaden Vaughn.

But the shots did not fall with enough frequency and Trigg County had some very untimely turnovers in the fourth quarter and that combination allowed Henderson County to ride it out to a 17-point win.

In addition to Alec Satterfield’s 23 points, Max Thompson added 14 and Cooper Davenport finished with 13 points for Henderson County.

Jhaden Vaughn finished his Trigg County career with a 13-point night. Jerimyah Shearer had 12 points while Landon Stewart added 11.

With the win, Henderson County improves to 25-6 and moves on to Monday night’s semifinals to take on University Heights. The two teams met back in December in Henderson with the Colonels taking a nine-point win.

Trigg County finishes the season at 12-20.
