LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kyra Elzy, head coach of the University of Kentucky women’s basketball team, has been relieved of duties, Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart announced Monday.
Elzy has been head coach of the Wildcats since November, 2020, when Matthew Mitchell resigned. Her four seasons as head coach were highlighted by winning the 2022 Southeastern Conference Tournament championship.
Elzy also served eight seasons on the Kentucky staff as assistant coach (2008-09 and 2009-10) and associate head coach (2010-11, 2011-12 and 2016-17 through 2019-20).
“I appreciate Kyra for her efforts at Kentucky, on and off the court, and wish her and her family the best in the future,” Barnhart said.
UK will begin a national search for a new head coach.

They should hire Stacey Sheppard.
Now that is a novel idea
Could be known as Sheppard U.
Was kind of hoping they would have held off this decision for couple of weeks in the possibility that Cali-fraudi might want to join her…nothing wrong with a 2-fer. I can hear the Cali-Aids getting fired up..Rah, Rah!!
If he doesn’t make it to the 2nd weekend of the tournament he will join her.
There’s word out the Matthew Mitchell may come back.
Now fire Cal!
Too bad Kyra couldn’t find more success. Thought she inherited tough situations (Mitchell’s sudden departure, COVID, player personality issues, etc.) but was always a class act.
Good luck to her in the next phase of her life.
