Thompson Pitches Hoptown Past Lyon on Opening Day

Hopkinsville’s J.J. Thompson went six strong innings on the mound as the Tigers claimed a pitchers’ duel at Lyon County 2-0 on Monday.

Thompson struck out 15 and allowed just one base hit and three walks in six innings of work to pick up the win in the season opener in Eddyville.

Dylan Sweeney pitched the seventh inning, striking out three and walking one while earning the save.

Lyon also got stellar pitching from Eli Baker and John Bingham, who combined to allow just one base hit. Baker struck out eight and walked one in four innings while Bingham had four strikeouts and five walks in three innings of relief.

The Hoptown offense scratched out single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

A two-out home run to left field by Gavin Powell put the Tigers up 1-0.

A two-out bases-loaded walk by Lucas Kaetzel plated the second run of the game.

Lyon’s only base hit was a leadoff single by Drew Richie in the bottom of the fifth innings. However, the next three batters each struck out.

Hopkinsville will travel to Ohio County on Thursday.

Lyon will host Marshall County on Thursday.
