Lyon County outhit hosts Madisonville-North Hopkins in its season opener on Thursday, but Mackenzie Stoltz made the difference at the plate and in the circle to lead the Lady Maroons to a 2-0 victory.
Stoltz was lights out in the circle, scattering five hits and issuing one walk while striking out 16 and not allowing a runner past second base. The Lady Lyons threatened in the second and seventh innings with runners on first and second with two outs, but couldn’t deliver the crucial hit.
Lilly Perry was strong in the circle for Lyon County, not allowing a hit until a third-inning single. But she ran into some two-out trouble in the sixth, beginning with Stoltz’s solo home run to left field. Sadie Kirk followed with a single before Addy Prow doubled the advantage with an RBI single.
Gracen Wynn led the Lady Lyons with a pair of hits, and she brought the tying run to the plate with a two-out single in the seventh. But Stoltz shut the door with a strikeout to send the Lady Maroons to their second win in a row after an opening night loss to Henderson County.
Courtney Collins, Jenna Coursey, and Brenna Breitrick each had a hit for Lyon County. The Lady Lyons will look to bounce back on Friday when they travel to Todd County Central. The Lady Rebels took last season’s meeting 3-1 in Eddyville.
Madisonville improved to 2-1 and will be off until Tuesday when the Lady Maroons travel to Webster County.
