It is sadly a sign of the athletic times for many high schools across the Commonwealth and the country. Officials with the Russellville athletic department announced Friday morning that they would be canceling the schools’ 2024 baseball season.
In the announcement posted on social media, officials noted “despite best efforts, we find ourselves unable to field a team due to insufficient player numbers. We understand the disappointment this news may bring to players, alumni, and fans alike.”
As for the future, the announcement stated “It will be our goal to continue developing a strong foundation of middle school and youth league players so that the RHS baseball program can proceed as normal in future seasons.”
Last season, the Panthers finished 2-22. The Panthers have not won more than three games in a season since 2017. Russellville’s last winning record came in 2014 when the Panthers finished 19-16.

The news of the cancellation hits hard, especially for avid baseball fans like us. It’s a tough call, but safety must come first. Yet, with the season scratched off the calendar, what will fill the void in our community? How do you think we can keep the spirit of baseball alive until we’re back on the diamond?
