Freshman Naomi Welborn had a career game Tuesday to lead the Todd County Central High School softball team to a 17-3 victory at Fort Campbell. Welborn had two triples, four total hits, and drove in a game-best five runs to lead the Rebels to the decisive win. It’s the fourth time in the past two seasons Todd has reached the 17-run mark.
Fellow senior Averie Luckenbill got things started for the Rebels, who never looked back after Luckenbill’s RBI double gave her squad a 1-0 lead in the second inning. And after the Falcons left the bases loaded during the bottom half of that inning, TCCHS scored twice more in the third. Welborn’s two-run triple later put Fort Campbell in an 8-0 hole
The host Falcons did punch back some in the bottom of the fifth, when RBI singles from Daniela Hernandez and Amare Moore cut Todd Central’s advantage to 8-3, but that would be the extent of the FCHS scoring for the night.
All told, the Rebels had five extra-base hits, drew 10 walks, and took advantage of six Fort Campbell errors to earn the six-inning decision. Naomi Gammon (three runs), Addison Woodall (four walks, two runs), Dakotah Gammon (1-for-4, two RBIs, walk, run) and Rylann Griggs (1-for-2, two runs, RBI, walk) were also outstanding for Todd County Central.
Woodall started the game in the circle for Todd and threw two hitless innings. She struck out six and walked three. Jocelyn Mock (1-0) earned the four-inning win after fanning five, walking five and surrendering four hits and three runs.
Moore had another strong game out of the lead-off spot for Fort Campbell, going 2-for-2 with a run, walk and her team’s lone stolen bases, but she did take the pitching loss after giving up seven walks, 10 hits and 14 runs (10 earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Hernandez ended up 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two walks.
Tuesday’s win was the 10th in a row by Todd County Central (1-1) in the series against Fort Campbell, dating back to 2008. The teams are scheduled to play again May 9 in Elkton. As for next opponents, the Rebels continue their six-game homestand Thursday against McLean County, while the Falcons (1-2) travel to take on district foe Hopkinsville.
