The Hopkinsville Tigers rode a fast start and the pitching of Gavin Mitchell to a 9-3 win over Trigg County on Tuesday.
The freshman righty allowed two earned runs over five-plus innings and struck out five in getting the win.
A six-run first inning helped Mitchell. Dylan Sweeney singled home two runs and Lucas Kaetzel plated a run with an infield single. J.J. Thompson, who led off the inning with a single, came to the plate again and scored Kaetzel with a hit.
Joining Thompson with two hits for Hoptown were Gavin Powell and Sweeney, who also doubled.
Trigg settled down after the rough first inning, getting two runs back in the fifth inning on a single by Haydon Reynolds and another in the sixth on a Hoptown passed ball.
Aidon Butts collected two of Trigg’s five hits.
The win was Hopkinsville’s third straight over Trigg County dating back to the 2018 region tournament.
Trigg County (2-2) will host Crittenden County on Wednesday, a game moved from Monday due to the weather.
Malcolm Tipler’s Tigers are off to their first 4-0 start in three years and will travel to Chester County, Tennessee on Saturday.
