
The freshmen did the damage for Hopkinsville as the Tigers ripped Trigg County 19-4 on Monday for their second win over the Wildcats in less than a week.
Gavin Mitchell allowed three hits in four innings of work. He struck out three and allowed two runs. Mitchell also got the win against the Wildcats last Tuesday, again allowing just two earned runs in an 8-3 Hoptown win.
Dylan Sweeney had three hits and drove in a career-high seven runs. He doubled home a pair of runs as part of a three-run first inning. His second inning double to right field scored Mitchell, who singled. Gavin Powell followed with a two-run double for a 6-0 Hoptown lead.
Sweeney capped his big night with a three-run triple to left field in the third inning that boosted Hoptown’s lead to 11-0.
The freshman infielder is hitting .478 this season and doubled his season RBI output in the game.
Aidon Butts got Trigg County on the board in the third with a two-run single. Slaton Carter followed with an RBI single, and Brayden Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Lucas Kaetzel had two hits and doubled home a pair of runs in the fourth inning for Hoptown.
Mitchell and Andrew Mayes each had three hits with Mayes driving in three as part of Hoptown’s 17-hit night.
Trigg had three hits with James Garnett collecting a double.
The win was Hoptown’s biggest over Trigg County since a 22-5 walloping in 2011.
Hopkinsville (6-1) will host Madisonville on Tuesday, while Trigg County’s record evens at 4-4 ahead of a Tuesday home game with Hopkins County Central.
