Kentucky started spring football practice last week and a lot of attention will be on quarterback Brock Vandagriff, a transfer from Georgia expected to be UK’s No. 1 quarterback next season.

So what can UK fans expect from him when they get to see him hopefully play in the Blue-White Game next month?

“I’d probably see myself as a pocket passer,” Vandagriff said. “I think I was a dual-threat in high school or classified as that. Can extend the play if need be, but not a type that’s looking to run.

“Obviously, if something presents itself, I think I can get down the field a little bit. Move the chains, but nothing spectacular on the ground.”

Vandagriff liked what he saw from his new teammates in offseason workouts

“It’s just a statement to the culture that’s already in place here. Just a couple different plays need to happen, and hopefully they will this next year. Hopefully that will be us,” the Georgia transfer said.

Running back Chip Trayanum, an Ohio State transfer, has been impressed by Vandagriff.

“He is a great guy on and off the field. You can tell he has that spark in him to show people what he can really do. We both have the same chip on our shoulder,” Trayanum said.

Texas A&M transfer Ray Cottrell said the quarterback has an “amazing arm” to guide the UK offense.

“Probably the best arm I have seen from a quarterback and I have seen a lot of great ones believe it or not. He is a leader. He is not a selfish guy at all. You can tell he loves his guys, especially his receivers. He really loves us,” the freshman receiver said. “We have a lot of fast guys. We are going to have a very fast offense.”

North Texas transfer Ja’Mori Maclin is another receiver who likes what he’s seen of Vandagriff so far.

“He’s a funny guy to be around. He’s not always serious. We joke around a lot. We got a class together and we’ve built a good relationship playing Fortnite with each other outside of football and even in the weight room and just being around him,” the UK receiver said. “He’s a pretty cool guy.”

  1. He is something we haven’t seen to much of here in Lexington. A legitimate 5 star QB who wasn’t rushed into playing he has learned from the best at Georgia and hopefully some of that winning rubs off onto the team. I still say this is by far the most talented football team we’ve ever had and its not even close. 2 positions that I’m interested in seeing is Chip at running back. Which I think he will be a 1,000 yard runner. Also cornerback which I think we will be better with so much experience and depth. Every other position will be better than last year. Our offensive line is 8-9 deep with potential starters and 10-11 deep all around that is ready. I think a player who everyone is overlooking but might transfer is lavell wright. I think if he stays he will be a solid 3rd team running back. Our tight ends and receivers rooms will both be much improved this year with depth and experience. Top 5 defensive line top 5 linebackers room and a top 25 secondary. Also our special team should be one of the best in the nation when the kicker returned for a super senior season he was excellent last year. If we perform above and beyond we win 10 games. A regular season we win 9 or 8 games depending on turnovers. Anything less than 8 wins will be a major disappointment to me with the best roster stops has ever had. I’m tired of talking about basketball. On On with the football coverage.

    1. La’velle wright will be our #2 this year. If he foesnt impress in the springvthey will be gettn a #2 from the pirtal cause pur RB room is very young and not ready in the 3spot on down.

  2. I’m ready for some football. I don’t care about Cal or what he does. I won’t be paying much attention to Bb if comes back next year. I will look at scores and that will be about it.
Glad Stoops stayed at UK and look forward to seeing this team play.
I always like to see a lot of effort in any sport, but never get too high or too low over kids playing a game.

  3. This is one of the very best qb’s in the country. And he is determined to show the world
how much he loves the game. This is such a great opportunity for UK to turn the page
in recruiting….and in confidence that "we are going to do it….instead of ….we can do it."
Of course nothing is set in stone…..injuries, but what a time in UK history to get such a
skilled and determined QB…..and a new coordinator to put in a new system based upon
    Vandergiff’s skills

  4. I am really excited about this years team, but I am excited every year, even before the Stoops era. We have ALL the pieces in place to have an exciting year. I am very interested to watch Hamadan’s offense, and I can not wait to get to Lexington to watch the Spring game

  5. There’s alot of potential with these new players, but injuries to key players could derail us! Not for sure how deep we are at each position! Here’s hoping for a great season, the KY fans could sure use something positive to happen this year!

  6. I am Brock Vandergriff’s biggest fans. I saw him in high school and he is awesome. He has got quite an arm for passing all the way down the field. He won State championship at Prince Avenue in Athens Ga. He is just like the article said, he’s a great guy. Super nice, friendly, and above all he is a Christian and he lives his faith. Turn him loose and he’ll win games for Kentucky if has protection and a great running back. I’m a Georgia fan, but I would love to see Brock beat Georgia. I wish him and Kentucky a great year.. Mary.

  7. Sounds good, the same things were said of Leary last year. Not buying the hype this year. If we stomp and I mean stomp Southern Mississippi, then I’m all in. If we just win by a two score, then it’s going to the same as years past. I want to believe that this team can kick ass and take names.
