A high school athlete in Clarksville died Friday night after collapsing during a pickup basketball game.

According to reports, Rossview senior Cam Ward was playing with several teammates when the incident occurred.

Rossview basketball coach Johnny Jackson said friends and teammates immediately called 911.

“When they got Cam out of the ambulance, they were still working on him,” Jackson told The Leaf Chronicle. “They did all they could to revive him, but …”

Ward averaged 13.7 points this past season as Rossview qualified for the program’s first Class 4A state basketball tournament this past season.

“As much as he played offense, he played defense. He didn’t believe in cheating the game; he gave it his all,” his mother Jessica Ward, told WKRN TV. “Whether he won or lost, he gave it his all … his smile would light up the room. He didn’t meet a stranger. He always believed in love; he always believed in showing his light; he always believed in him,” Ward’s mother, Jessica Ward, said.

A GoFundMe was created for Ward by his older brother Messiah. The family is raising funds to take care of some of the medical bills and funeral arrangements.

“Cam signified everything that our program and our school thrives to be,” Jackson told the Clarksville newspaper. “As a coach, you’re like a father to these kids and this is like losing a son. I never dreamt about going through something like this. Right now, it’s about being there for his family, first and then consoling his friends and all of his teammates.”
