Caldwell Suffers Third Loss at St. Mary, 3-2

A two-out single by Brett Haas in the bottom of the fourth inning put Paducah St. Mary in the lead, and the host Vikings held on to beat Caldwell County 3-2 in baseball action on Thursday.

The Tigers (11-3) had just tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth.

St. Mary (7-1) got off to a quick start with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Luke Sims doubled home the first run of the game, then Aidan Hrdlicka singled in another run to make it 2-0.

Those were the first earned runs of the season allowed by Caldwell’s Scott Cortner, who had opened the year by surrendering just one unearned run in 23 innings.

The Tigers tied things in the top of the fourth inning when David Ginn’s single to left with two outs brought in two runs.

But St. Mary got the only other run of the game in the home half of that frame.

Landon Durbin was the winning pitcher for the Vikings. He went four innings allowed one earned run on two base hits. Durbin struck out seven and walked five.

Jake Haas picked up a save. He went three innings, allowing just three base hits.

Ari Wells suffered the loss on the mound, despite surrendering just one unearned run on three base hits in three innings of relief.

Brett Haas was 3-for-4 at the plate for St. Mary while Sims finished 2-for-2.

For Caldwell, Westin King went 2-for-2.

St. Mary outhit the Tigers 7-5.

Caldwell will next host Webster County Friday afternoon.
