Guess who SiriusXM College Sports Radio had on Friday afternoon to break down the women’s Final Four?
It was new Kentucky coach Kenny Brooks, who took Virginia Tech to the 2023 Final Four and had played Final Four teams Iowa and North Carolina State this season.
It gave Brooks the national stage to also talk about his recent decision to become the head coach at Kentucky.
“First and foremost, it was a very difficult decision when you have so much success at a previous school. It’s gonna take something very, very special,” Brooks said on national radio. “I thought this was a tremendous opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.
“My time at Virginia Tech, we did wonderful things at Virginia Tech. But in your career, you want to put yourself in position so you can better yourself, your family, align yourself with the best. And this is an opportunity at the start in my heart that I knew it was gonna be really good.
“So very hard decision and it’s kind of funny because a lot of people think that, okay, you transfer situations, you go to a new job, and it just, you know, just beats you up and try again. But it’s not back and forth. It’s been a whirlwind.”
No surprise Brooks was on his way to Virginia because he wanted to “have closure” at Virginia Tech. Of course, two of his players — All-American point guard Georgia Amoore and center Clara Strack — have already announced they are transferring to UK. That’s part of the “whirlwind” process Brooks has been part of.
“It’s been a whirlwind but I have a tremendous support system behind me and that’s what gets me through,” Brooks said.
The new UK coach was asked about Amoore transferring to Kentucky which was no surprise after she called him a “second dad” after Virginia Tech’s second round NCAA Tournament loss. Of course, NCAA regulations prevent Brooks from commenting on any player that has not signed with Kentucky yet.
Obviously, I would love to be able to talk to you about that, but the only thing I can tell you is that yes there is a possibility of recruiting her and that’s the only thing I can talk about right now,” Brooks said.
Enough said Coach.
