Moments after Henderson County’s Alec Satterfield lined a two-out, ninth-inning single into left field Thursday night, the high school baseball game between the host Colonels and University Heights Academy was ultimately suspended due to lightning.

The 2nd Region foes were tied 1-1 when the game was stopped due to incoming inclement weather. Henderson and UHA were already scheduled to play again Monday in Hopkinsville. As a result, Thursday’s matchup will be restarted and resumed before the other game begins.

Henderson County took an early 1-0 lead on Cooper Vowels’ two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the third inning. The Blazers would battle back, though, tying the game at 1-all on a two-out RBI single from UHA’s Josh Pace.

The Colonels managed to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh but had their chances of a walk-off win thwarted when Hayden Hunt registered back-to-back strikeouts to send the game to extra innings. Hunt pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief before the suspension, striking out seven and allowing no runs.

Ryan Luckey started the game for Heights and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings. He won’t earn a decision, but allowed just three hits and three walks, as well as the lone run, before coming out in the fourth.

Pace currently has half of the Blazer hits with a 2-for-4 performance. Jaiden Miles scored the UHA run when he drew a lead-off walk in the sixth, advanced to second base on a passed ball, took third on an Aiden Jones sacrifice, and scored on Pace’s ground ball to the left side of the field.

University Heights had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth, after Hunt (walk) and Cadence Gibson (single) reached base with one out, but Caden Dotson was able to induce a double-play grounder to end the threat and send the contest into the bottom half of the ninth.

The Colonels, in the midst of a three-game losing streak, have games scheduled Friday (at Gibson Southern in Fort Branch, Ind.) and Saturday (at home against McLean County).
