The Heritage Christian Academy Warriors’ bid for a KCAC state championship came up just one game short Saturday evening. After advancing to the KCAC title game with a win in the quarterfinals Friday night and then the semifinals earlier in the day Saturday, the Warriors fell in the title game 13-3 in five innings.

HCA opened fast in the championship, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The Warriors plated three runs on two bases-loaded walks and an error, all with two outs, to take the early 3-0 lead.

From there however, it was all Highlands Latin. The Highlanders tied the game with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning.

Highlands Latin added three more runs in the second, two in the third, and then reached the 10-run margin with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Pitching struggles and some fielding issues were costly for the Warriors. HCA hurlers gave up seven walks and the defense was charged with three errors in the game.

The Warriors were held to just one hit over the five innings, that coming off the bat of Jayden Nichols.

Earlier in the day, the Warriors advanced to the championship game by routing Portland Christian 15-1 in six innings. Leading 7-1 going into the sixth, Heritage put the game away with an 8-run inning.

HCA scored in every inning but the top of the 5th on their way to the win.

Bradley Boyd finished 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Jayden Nichols was 2-4 with a double and 4 RBIs. Cadyn Travis joined the party going 2-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Jayden Nichols went all six innings on the hill for Heritage Christian. He gave up just one unearned run on six hits, striking out five and walking none.

Boyd and Nichols were named to the All-Tournament Team.
