It was an odd day at the ballpark for both Lyon County and Trigg County as the 5th District teams met for the second time this season on the baseball field.
Two Lyon County pitchers combined to issue 10 walks and hit four batters. They also didn’t allow a hit in the 9-3 win over the Wildcats. The win was Lyon’s 13th straight over Trigg County dating back to 2018.
Lyon County was limited in who they could throw due to pitch counts from their weekend trip to the All A Classic State Tournament.
Austin Spears began the game on the mound and was staked to a 5-0 lead before he threw his first pitch. Brady Belt and Korben Lucas doubled to left, and Spears added a two-run homer in the opening frame.
A hit batter and four straight walks saw Trigg get two runs back in the first.
Nate Simmons walked in the fourth, advanced on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch to draw Trigg to within 5-3.
The Wildcats had several other chances to dent the scoreboard but a pickoff and caught stealing ended a pair of innings prematurely. Trigg stranded nine runners, five in scoring position.
Lyon tacked on a run in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Lucas had three of Lyon County’s 10 hits and drove in a pair of runs. Belt, John Bingham, and Peyton Williams each had a pair of hits.
Spears started the game on the mound, going three innings. He struck out six and walked six. Bingham pitched the final four innings and was credited with the win. He also struck out six and walked four.
In a hole early, Trigg County got a strong relief appearance from Chase Hampton who went 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out five.
Lyon County completed a 6-0 sweep of the district and will be the No. 1 seed in the district tournament later this month at Livingston Central. The Lyons have won 33 straight games against district teams and improved to 16-5 overall.
Trigg County (7-11) is 1-4 in the district and needs a win at Livingston Central on Thursday to force a three-way tie with the Cardinals and Crittenden County for second place.
