After a region tournament that saw them catch the full five-bass limit, the first state tournament was tougher for Trigg County Middle Schoolers Eli Moore and Parker Hagewood.
The Trigg duo stands in 58th place after day one of the Operation UNITE Bass Fishing State Championships presented by UK HealthCare Bass Fishing Tournament on Kentucky Lake.
They caught two fish weighing 4 pounds, 9 ounces.
It was also a tough day for last week’s region-winning team of Ty Redden and Clayton Wyatt of Marshall County who caught three fish weighing 5 pounds, 2 ounces, good for 55th place.
Rain earlier in the week caused a steep increase in lake levels and took away much of the ability to fish shallow, while wind speeds between 10 and 20 miles per hour most of the day limited other strategies.
The day-one leaders from Muhlenberg County had no such trouble catching fish on Friday.
Isiah Smith and Spencer Shemwell, who finished in fifth place at the region tourney on Lake Barkley last week, are the day-one leaders with 21 pounds, 6 ounces – nearly 10 pounds more than last week’s haul.
The second Muhlenberg County team of Chase Rickard and Dylan Eubanks are in second place with 19 pounds, 7 ounces and caught the big bass that weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces. Their catch was nearly seven pounds more than last week.
One of the Muhlenberg teams will try to become the school’s third state champion duo in four years on Kentucky Lake.
Eli Dickerson and Landon Elder of Louisville Trinity stand in third place with 17 pounds, 2 ounces, while Covington Catholic’s Brandon Smith and Phoenix Parks are fourth at 16 pounds, 6 ounces.
Day two is expected to offer up similar weather on Saturday with teams expected to check in their catch at 2:45 at the Kentucky Dam State Park Marina.
