The University Heights Academy Blazers picked up their 20th win of the season Friday night. The Blazers broke open a close game with six runs in the bottom of the 6th as they took a 9-3 win over the Union County Braves.
The Blazers were only ahead 3-1 as they came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. A single from Eli Finch, a walk to Jaiden Miles, and a bunt single from Ryan Luckey loaded the bases with nobody out. Hayden Hunt then walked to force in the first run of the inning.
The Braves looked as if they might get out of the inning without any more damage after a pair of strikeouts. However, instead of getting out of the inning, the Braves saw the roof collapse on top of them.
Courtland Gibson cleared the bases with a 3-run double to make it 7-1. Josh Pace doubled to drive in another run and extend the lead to 8-1. A single from Aiden Jones drove in the last run of the rally and made it a 9-1 ballgame.
Union County would get two runs in the top of the 7th but that would be nowhere near enough to get them back in the game.
The Blazers had taken a 1-0 lead in the second on a bases-loaded walk to Hayden Hunt. UHA added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a steal of home by Jaiden Miles and an RBI double from Cadence Gibson to make it 3-0.
Union County got on the board in the top of the 6th inning, trimming the lead to 3-1 before things completely got away from them in the bottom half of the inning.
Josh Pace was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored for UHA. Ryan Luckey ended up 2-3 with a run scored. Courtland Gibson had 3 RBIs and Hayden Hunt added two more.
The Blazers ended up out-hitting the Braves 9 to 6.
On the mound, Cadence Gibson got the start for UHA and picked up the win. He went five innings, giving up no runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking five.
