Kentucky leads the Southeastern Conference baseball standings with an 18-6 record, one game ahead of Tennessee and Arkansas, going into this weekend’s three-game series at Florida.

The Gators are sixth in the SEC Eastern Division at 10-14 going into this afternoon’s game with the Cats.

“It’s going to be a tough series,” said former major league baseball player Doug Flynn, a two-time World Series champion with Cincinnati.

Flynn, a Lexington banker, regularly attends UK baseball games and often is the analyst on the SEC Network+ live streams along with Dick Gabriel.

“If you are not in the mix (for the league title) like Florida, you want to be the spoiler,” Flynn said on WPBK-FM radio. “This is a big series for Kentucky. If they can go .500 in the next six games (UK hosts Vanderbilt to end the season) it should not hurt their chances to host a (NCAA Tournament) region or super region.

“It would really be good to play those tournament games at home. Fans have been really coming out. There have been over 20,000 fans at the last two weekend series.”

Kentucky has never been to the College World Series but home-field advantage would certainly enhance UK’s chances of making that happen this season.

“The bigger and better the team UK is playing, the better UK plays,” Flynn said. “Georgia came in with an unbelievable offense and home run hitters and Kentucky outhit them and swept them.

“At the beginning of the year Kentucky really was not on anyone’s radar. We have all been surprised at how well they have done. They went into the (transfer) portal and that really helped them. Now they just need to keep it going. They have really been fun to watch.”
