Caldwell County senior Cole Slone fired a five-hit shutout on Senior Day, and the Tigers won for the sixth straight game.
Ari Wells drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning and Caldwell used that tally to beat Calloway County 1-0 Friday at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.
On a day when base hits were difficult to come by on either side, Caldwell put together three singles in the sixth inning to load the bases.
Drew Stevens singled into left field to start the inning. Carter Whittington followed with a one-out hit on a bloop into center, and Luke Parker lashed a line drive into right to load the bases.
Wells then delivered a fly ball to left field that was deep enough for Stevens to come in with the only run of the contest.’
Slone (7-1) struck out nine and walked just one while throwing 104 pitches in the complete-game effort.
But Calloway’s Nick Cantrell was almost as effective. Cantrell went the distance for the Lakers, allowing just the one run on five base hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Calloway’s Cole Lockhart was the only player on either side with more than one base hit, going 2-for-3 with a double. The Lakers are now 9-18.
Westin King and Channing Puckett also had singles for the Tigers.
Caldwell has won nine of its last 11 outings.
The Tigers are now 6-3 in one-run games this season. They have claimed six straight games with Calloway.
Caldwell will be right back in action on Saturday, hosting another 1st Region school, Carlisle County, at 11 a.m.
