Harper Holeman - Caldwell County
Caldwell County’s girls faced some stiff competition in the Lexington Tates Creek Showdown — and brought home a 1-1 record from Saturday’s trip.
The Lady Tigers earned a 5-3 victory over Fort Thomas Highlands, but suffered a 1-0 loss to Louisville Male in a game the Bulldogs won in their final at-bat.
In the win over Highlands, a four-run second inning was the difference.
Brylee Butts doubled home two runs in the big frame while Daelen Kizzee and Alicia Stanley each had RBI singles as Caldwell broke a 1-1 tie.
The Bluebirds (22-10) made things interesting with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Caldwell held on in the six-inning contest. (Games were played with a 90-minute time limit.)
Kizzee was 2-for-2 at the plate with the one RBI while Butts finished 1-for-3 and knocked in two. Stanley was 1-for-3 and drove in a run.
Alexis Wood was the winning pitcher for Caldwell. She allowed three earned runs on four base hits. Wood had one strikeout and walked two.
In the loss to Male, the Lady Tigers were held to just three base hits.
The Bulldogs (23-6) scored the only run of the game on a bases-loaded bunt with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Wood suffered the loss despite allowing just the one run on four hits. She struck out five and walked six.
Butts, Kizzee and Adley Lewis each had singles for the Lady Tigers.
Caldwell’s girls, now 17-14, will next host Crittenden County on Monday for Senior Day.
A victory would guarantee the Lady Tigers a winning season.
