A pair of errors opened the door for Muhlenberg County’s five-run first inning on Monday and the Mustangs’ Talan Cartwright did the rest on the mound to blank hosts Hopkinsville 6-0.
Dalton Brigance’s two-run double highlighted the Mustangs’ first at-bat to chase Hoptown starting pitcher Gavin Powell, with Gavin Mitchell coming on in relief.
Mitchell pitched the next five and two-thirds, allowing a single run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts, but the Tigers couldn’t get anything going against Muhlenberg’s Cartwright.
Cartwright earned his third win of the season, holding the Tigers to two hits with a walk and 11 strikeouts over seven innings. JJ Thompson broke up the no-hitter with a double in the bottom of the third and Powell singled for Hoptown’s only hits of the game.
Six Mustangs each had a hit and Brigance and Sumner Shelton each drove in a pair of runs.
Powell took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned, on two hits with a pair of walks. Thompson walked one and struck out four in an inning and a third.
Hopkinsville slipped to 17-8 and will round out its district slate with a doubleheader with Heritage Christian Academy on Tuesday.
