With Trigg County making some history in the game immediately before theirs, the Union County Bravettes decided why not make a little history of their own in the final game of the quarterfinals of the 2nd Region softball tournament Monday night at Christian County High School. The Bravettes scored five times in the top of the first inning and were never threatened the rest of the game as they took a 13-2 six-inning win over Madisonville-North Hopkins.

The win over the Lady Maroons was the first for Union County since March 20, 2014 and ended a 15-game losing streak to the Lady Maroons. Four of the Union County losses during that run had come in the 2nd Region tournament.

The Lady Maroons had an error on the first play of the game and things went downhill from there as Madisonville would end up being charged with four errors over six innings.

After the game-starting error, there were four walks, a passed ball, another error, and a couple of base hits as the Bravettes jumped out to the 5-0 lead. Ashlynn Hargrove and Brylee Jackson had RBI singles in the inning for Union County.

Sadie Kirk blasted a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 5-1 but there would be no slowing down the Bravettes on this Memorial Day night.

Union County scored one in the second and four in the third to run the lead out to 10-1.

Madisonville added a run in the bottom of the fourth but the Bravettes were then able to close out the win with one in the fifth and two in the sixth and move on to Tuesday night’s second semifinal against Trigg County.

Union County catcher Aspen Davis had a huge game for Union County. She was 3-5 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. Audrey Staley finished 2-4 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a run scored.

Sadie Kirk and Mackenzie Stoltz had two hits each to lead the Lady Maroons.

In the circle, Peyton Jenkins went the distance for Union County, giving up two runs, one of them earned, on five hits, striking out two and walking none.

The win puts Union County in the second semifinal Tuesday night against the Trigg County Lady Wildcats at 7:30. The teams split two games this season with Trigg County winning 10-9 and Union County winning 8-7 in the Kentucky 2A Section 1 tournament.
