For the second year in a row, the search for a new boys’ basketball coach is underway at Todd County Central. Coach Russell Malone informed YourSportsEdge.Com Tuesday afternoon that he was stepping away from the Rebel program after one season on the job.
Malone pointed to family considerations as the primary reason he was taking some time away from coaching high school basketball. His wife Leigh Ellen was named the new principal at Christian County High School just over a a month ago.
Speaking with YSE, Malone conveyed his best wishes for the Rebel basketball program and noted his enjoyment of coaching some very talented players over his 31-year coaching career.
During his season in Elkton, the Rebels went 13-16. Malone had replaced John Stigall, who left following the 2022-2023 season.
Malone took the Todd County Central job after stepping down at West Creek High School.
Malone served as a boys and girls assistant at Franklin-Simpson from 1993-99. He then moved to Hopkinsville, where he was an assistant under head coach Terry Hayes, who was just announced as the new head coach at University Heights.
Malone left Hopkinsville in June of 2004 to take his first head coaching position at Warren East, where he stayed until spring of 2008.
He headed to Clarksville High in the fall of 2008 to take over as boys’ head coach at Northwest. He also served as assistant athletic director.
Malone would return to Kentucky in the fall of 2011 to begin a stay at Trigg County. He was an assistant coach in the school for two seasons before spending the 2013-2014 season as the girls’ head coach.
