How good is Kentucky recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow at building relationships with recruits?
Marrow is so good that Paducah Tilghman coach Sean Thompson “honestly” thought that star player Martels Carter, a top 200 player nationally, was going to play his college football at Clemson.
“Martels is a relationship guy and is very loyal. He had relationships with a lot of guys before he moved to Kentucky (from Tennessee),” Thompson said on WLAP Sunday Morning Sports Talk. “I honestly thought early he was going to Clemson.
“However, he has been committed to Kentucky silently for some time. The Kentucky coaching staff did a really good job. Big Dog (Marrow) did a really good job on him. He is good at going in and creating relationships with players and their families. He keeps it real when he is talking to them.”
Thompson said UK head coach Mark Stoops, defensive coordinator Brad White and safeties coach Frank Buffano also had key roles in recruiting the 6-2, 195-pound Carter.
The four-star prospect announced his commitment to UK on Saturday. He had about 50 scholarship offers.
“Vince is the real deal because he is real. He doesn’t feed you a lie and a lot of times these kids see the vision he talked about play out,” Thompson said.
Even though Carter played in Rome, Ga., as a high school freshman and then in Chattanooga his sophomore season before moving to Paducah, he had an earlier relationship with the UK staff.
“He went to camp there when he was younger. He remembered Buffalo taught a different man (coverage) technique at camp when he was younger than he does now,” Thompson said.
Now he’s going to get to learn a lot more technique work from Buffalo, White and the UK coaching staff.

I just hope he doesn’t get poached away. He is going to have the big schools after him until the day he’s on campus. We just need to keep him feel wanted. He is going to get playing time as a freshman and he will start in his second year. He’s like a Ty Bryant but better. The only difference is Bryant has alot more depth and experience to walk through. Carter will learn behind Bryant and Fallen and with Carter in the fold too we will have a great secondary. So I’m very happy about the future of our secondary.
Does anyone really care what Tavion Wallace thinks if he doesn’t want to follow his brother?
