Caldwell County’s Kyndle Mahaffey repeated as state champion in the 100-meter wheelchair dash and set a new Class A record.
The freshman won the Class 2A title last year and added another first-place medal to her collection with Caldwell’s drop to 1A this year. Her time of 30 seconds flat just missed establishing a new overall state record in all classes by .03 seconds.
In her final track and field meet, Avery Wells established herself as one of Caldwell County’s top female athletes in program history with two medal podium appearances and two near misses.
Wells ran on the 400-meter relay team which finished in third place with the second-fastest time in school history – 51.17 seconds. Mariah Merritt, Addison Middleton-Mobley, and Haley Dalton rounded out the single circuit on the track for the time that just missed the 1995 school record by .27 seconds.
The 800-meter relay team of Wells, Chevy McGowan, Brilee Hubbard, and Haley Dalton finished in eighth place in 1:50.28 – a season-best and third-fastest in program history.
Wells was ninth in the long jump. She missed the medal podium by a half inch. Her jump was 15 feet, 5 inches. She also finished in ninth place in the 200-meter dash in 26.91 seconds — .31 seconds out of eighth place. Wells graduates as owner of four of the school’s seven fastest times ever.
In other finishes at the state meet on the campus of the University of Kentucky, Addison Middleton-Mobley was 11th in the long jump at 15-1.
Haley Dalton was 12th in the 100-meter dash in 13.20 seconds – a personal best and eighth-fastest in school history.
TJ Goodwin, owner of the school record in the pole vault, came in 16th place on Thursday at 6 feet, 6 inches.
Emma Ward was 17th in the discus throw at 87-1.
Benashka Thomas finished in 20th place in the shot put with a heave of 28 feet, 8.25 inches.
The 1600-meter relay team of Jordan Ortt, TJ Goodwin, Mariah Merritt, and Medeline Thomas came in 22nd place in 4:44.81.
Caldwell’s girls scored seven points from their top-eight finishes to tie for 21st place.
