Smith Makes Madisonville History at State Track Meet

Trashaun Smith is a two-time state track and field champion.

The Madisonville-North Hopkins junior ascended to the top of the medal podium in the long jump and high jump at Saturday’s Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Class 3A State Meet in Lexington.

He is the first Madisonville track athlete to win two state championships in a single meet since at least 1954. He became the first Maroon to win a state title since Jon Hood won the high jump in 2009.

DeShericka McReynolds won a pair of state titles at the 2011 girls’ state meet in the shot and discus.

Smith’s first leap in the long jump at 22 feet and one-quarter inch held up for the remainder of the event, bettering Simon Kenton’s Brayden Polly by an inch and a half.

Smith also took the high jump title by clearing 6 feet, 8 inches, and was fifth in the triple jump at 44 feet. 4.5 inches.

Smith owns the school records in the long jump (23-6) and triple jump (46-8.5), while Hood has the school mark in the high jump at 6-10.

Smith’s day earned him 24 points and gave the Maroons a 10th-place finish.

In the final distance race of his standout career, Maddox Knight finished 20th in the 1600-meter run in 4:44.79.
