Trashaun Smith, believed to be Madisonville-North Hopkins’ first two-time state track and field champion, was named First Team All-State by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The junior won the long and high jumps at the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Class 3A State Meet in Lexington.
He is the first Madisonville track athlete to win two state championships in a single meet since at least 1954. He became the first Maroon to win a state title since Jon Hood won the high jump in 2009.
Smith’s first leap in the long jump at 22 feet and one-quarter inch held up for the remainder of the event, bettering Simon Kenton’s Brayden Polly by an inch and a half.
Smith also took the high jump title by clearing 6 feet, 8 inches, and was fifth in the triple jump at 44 feet. 4.5 inches.
Smith owns the school records in the long jump (23-6) and triple jump (46-8.5), while Hood has the school mark in the high jump at 6-10.
