Vince Marrow has always insisted he’s not overly concerned about the star ranking when Kentucky recruits a player. In recent years, Kentucky football has been able to attract far more four-star recruits — and even an occasional five-star player — but the UK football staff also at times will take what it considers a hidden gem.
Kentucky may have landed that type player Friday night when 6-2, 272-pound defensive lineman Nicholas Smith of Georgia verbally committed to the Wildcats.
“I’m officially a Wildcat,” Smith posted on X. “Thank God to be in this position. Can’t wait to work onto the next level. Wildcat family I’m home,” Smith posted.
The Macon Walnut Grove defensive lineman had been to UK earlier this month and is on his official visit this weekend.
“That is very much every high school player’s dream to play in the SEC. I feel very blessed to be in this opportunity and to be able to play at the next level and be able to show my potential and potentially get drafted one day,” Smith told Josh Edwards of The CatsPause.
He had 58 tackles, eight tackles for loss, eight quarterback hurries, four quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery last season. His other scholarship offers were from West Virginia, Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State and Central Florida.

I think he is a good signing. Alabama, Michigan, and Ohio State were not after him, but I think he has the potential to make them regret that.
