When you look at the numbers Kanyon Johnson put up during the 2023 football season, you can understand why the Madisonville-North Hopkins quarterback will be the focus of both opponents and college scouts during the 2024 season.

It is one thing for a quarterback to lead his team by passing for nearly 2,000 yards. It is another to also lead your team in rushing with more than 1,200 yards, and that is exactly what Johnson did last season.

He finished the season completing 146 passes in 213 attempts with only 5 interceptions. Johnson ended up with 1,925 yards and 18 touchdowns through the air.

However, Kanyon Johnson’s impact on the field was not only felt when he was putting the ball in the air. As a junior in 2023, Johnson also led the Maroons in rushing with 1,287 yards and had 16 rushing touchdowns, which was second on the team to Markezz Hightower, who carried the ball into the end zone 19 times.

Add it all up, and Johnson accounted for 3,212 yards and 34 touchdowns. Oh, and by the way, he also scored on four two-point conversions. Those are some pretty impressive numbers.

Johnson’s performance helped the Maroons to become one of the most potent offenses in Western Kentucky in 2023, averaging 41 points a game on their way to an 8-3 record. And you don’t figure they plan to slow things down much when the season gets rolling in just over seven weeks.

If the 6-5 senior can replicate those numbers during 2024, the season should hold significant promise for Madisonville-North Hopkins and bring plenty of excitement to the Maroon-clad fans every Friday night this fall.
