Kentucky football has had some dynamic, versatile offensive players in my 50 years covering the Wildcats but I am not sure anyone was a more versatile, dynamic playmaker than Randall Cobb.
He played receiver, quarterback, punt returner and kickoff returner and could win a game from any of those spots. He was a first-team All-American pick his junior season before he headed to the NFL after setting a Southeastern Conference single season record for all-purpose yardage with 2,396 yards in 2010.
Cobb set a then UK record with 37 career touchdowns in three seasons and had game-winning fourth-quarter touchdowns against Arkansas, Louisville, South Carolina, Auburn and Georgia.
Cobb was a high school standout in Alcoa High School in Tennessee who was not seriously recruited by Tennessee until after he made his commitment to play at Kentucky. He never wavered when the Vols tried to get him to flip his college choice.
Cobb was a second-round draft pick by Green Bay and spent 13 years in the league before retiring after last season. He had over 7,600 yards and 54 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl in 2014 when he had a career-high 1,287 yards.
Now he is starting a new career with the SEC Network as a college football studio analyst. He will appear on select editions of “SEC Now” throughout the fall and will also join co-host Alyssa Lang on “Out of Pocket Presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors” each week.
“We are thrilled to welcome Randall to the SEC Network crew,” said Pete Watters, SEC Network Coordinating Producer II. “His experience and knowledge of the game, both from playing at Kentucky and in the NFL, will be such an asset to our football coverage.”
Cobb, a member of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame and Kentucky Pro Sports Hall of Fame, said in a release from ESPN that he was “incredibly excited” with his new role.
“The level of greatness this conference provides year after year is unmatched. I cannot wait to return to the conference family with this SEC Network crew,” he said.
