Now that’s the way to start a brand new season. Sam Perez-Camillo’s game-winning goal inside the final minute capped off a come-from-behind effort for the Todd County Central Rebels as they opened the 2024 season with a 5-4 win at Hopkins County Central.
Central controlled the early part of the match, taking a 1-0 lead when Will Scott left everyone in his wake flying down the right side of the field and powering the ball into the net. The lead grew to 2-0 when Brennan Scott scored off a corner kick and put the momentum fully on the side of the Storm.
Todd County Central got on the board less than four minutes later when Tanner Henderson took a pass from Kollin Ensign and headed it into the net, cutting the lead to 2-1.
The Storm got that goal back at the 30:30 mark when Riley Dunlap took the ball down the right side and beat the keeper to make it 3-1 heading into the break.
The Hopkins Central momentum going into the half was short-lived, however. Tanner Henderson scored the second of his goals just a minute into the second half to cut the lead to 3-2. Less than 4 minutes later Carson Caracciolo took a deflection right in front of the net and tied the match at 3-3.
The Storm appeared to have things going their way again when Jude Mitchell sent a rocket from the front of the box over the outstretched arms of the keep and into the back of the net, giving the lead back to Hopkins Central at 4-3.
But once again, back came the Rebels. Tanner Henderson completed his hat trick by drilling a shot past the keeper at the 65:00 mark to even it back up at 4-4. That set the stage for Perez-Camillo’s winning shot, which came off a ball sent to the front of the net by Tanner Henderson.
Up next for the Rebels (1-0) is the home opener Tuesday night against Muhlenberg County.
Hopkins County Central (0-1) gets back to action Thursday on the road at Trigg County.
