While Todd County Central boys soccer coach Mike Smith would tell you his team has not played near perfectly during the first week of the season, it has been, at least in terms of their record, a perfect start to 2024 for the Rebels. Todd County Central completed that ‘perfect’ week with a 2-1 road win at Owensboro Catholic Saturday morning.
Both teams struggled to score early on in the match. Owensboro Catholic broke the ice first with a goal at 30:00 to take a 1-0 lead. That would still be the score when the two teams went to the break.
The Rebels then came out in the second half and stepped things up a notch. Todd County Central came out and started pressing the Aces and it paid off when Tanner Henderson scored off a long pass from Chris Salazar and evened the match at 1-1.
One thing that has been obvious early in the season is that Rebel opponents are going to have their hands full with that 1-2 combination that has been a key to the early part of the season.
The Rebels appeared to have taken the lead with 10 minutes left in the match on a long shot from Salazar. However, instead of a goal, the Rebels were awarded a corner kick. However, on the play where the corner kick was awarded, the Aces’ kicker was presented with a yellow card for interference on a put back attempt by John Ross Cardwell.
With a backup keeper in goal for Owensboro Catholic, Alex Figueroa sent a perfect corner kick into the box where Tanner Henderson headed it into the goal for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
The Rebels got another big game in goal from John Mark Campbell, who finished the day with seven saves.
Todd County Central (4-0) is now off until Thursday when they will host Logan County in a big 13th District contest.
