The Trigg County Lady Wildcats continue to make strides in its rebuilding process but some of last year’s issues reappeared in Monday’s season-opening loss to McLean County.

Trigg dropped a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) decision to the Lady Cougars at Wildcat Gym. Trigg’s serve and receive game was spotty at times, allowing McLean to string together a 6-0 run and a pair of five-point streaks.

“That really got us, especially in the middle,” Trigg County coach Madison Rogers said. “We had a lineup change right before the game and the girls adjusted and were fantastic.”

Trigg took a 16-14 lead in the second set and was up 19-17 before McLean reeled off seven straight points. That proved to be too much for the Lady Wildcats to mount a rally.

The Lady Wildcats never led in the third set.

For Rogers, the mental approach is just as important as what’s on the court.

“We need to play faster, but we started getting tired by the third set,” Rogers said. “We’ve been working on that in practice. We also have to get past the mental mistakes and push past that.”

Grace Carver had five kills and four blocks for the Lady Wildcats, and Carmen Boyd and Trinity Perkins each had two aces.

The win was McLean’s fourth straight over the Lady Wildcats dating back to 2017 and kept the Lady Wildcats from winning a season opener for the first time since 2015.

Trigg County returns to the court on Tuesday with a district home match with Livingston Central.
