The Caldwell County Lady Tigers used a strong defensive effort in the second half and a big effort from senior Lexie Sullivan to advance to the girls’ soccer 2nd Region All A Classic championship match. The Lady Tigers rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to get past Lyon County 2-1 in the first semifinal match Tuesday night at Fort Campbell.
Sullivan scored less than two minutes into the second half to tie the match at 1-1.
Lyon County had taken the lead at the 32:00 mark when Alice Smith found the net, giving the Lady Lyons some momentum going into the break. But, Sullivan’s goal right out of the gate in the second half quickly took that momentum and turned it in the other direction.
After being outshot 5 to 3 in the first half of play, the Lady Tigers clamped down defensively and did not allow Lyon County many good looks at the goal in the second half. Caldwell County would win the shots on goal battle in the second half six shots to three. For the night, the Lady Tigers had nine shots while the Lady Lyons had eight.
The match stayed even until 66:30 when Sullivan broke clear on a run down the left side and scored the go-ahead goal, putting Caldwell County up 2-1.
Lyon County appeared to have tied the match inside the final four minutes off a corner kick, but an offsides call negated the goal and with it the last good chance to the Lady Lyons to pull even.
Caldwell County (2-0) is now headed to Thursday night’s regional championship match to face University Heights. That match will be played at Fort Campbell.
