After the opening set Tuesday night, it looked as if the University Heights Academy Blazers could be in for a long night. But the defending 2nd Region champions said ‘not so fast.’ After dropping the opening set, the Lady Blazers came storming back to take the next three sets and claim a 3-1 road win over the Webster County Lady Trojans.
The match started off about as bad as it could for the Lady Blazers as Webster County took a 25-6 win to go up one set to none in the match.
But a young Lady Blazer team that returns just one player off last year’s regional title team refused to go down without a fight.
UHA rallied to take the second set 25-23 and evened the match at one set apiece.
The Lady Blazers carried that momentum over into the third set, winning it 27-25 and going up two sets to one.
The Lady Blazers then closed things out by taking the 4th set 25-21.
Senior Olivia Oakley had a solid effort in her return from off-season knee surgery. Oakley finished with 11 kills, 14 digs, and 1 service ace. 8th grade outside hitter Kiley Lambert led the Blazers in aces with 5 and had 8 digs and 3 kills.
Freshman middle hitter Taylor Cantrell had two kills, 3 aces, and 1 block. 8th grader Gretchen Durham served 3 aces, dug 9 balls, two blocks, and 37 assists. Junior Meg long had two solo blocks, 3 digs and 1 ace. Sophomore middle hitter Niyati Patel contributed 2 aces and 2 kills. Junior Katherine Wood pulled 7 digs in her debut at libero.
UHA (1-0) is back in action Thursday, traveling across town for an 8th District contest at Hopkinsville.
