Hopkinsville High School honored former head coach and current offensive coordinator Craig Clayton at halftime of Friday’s matchup with Mayfield, recognizing his hard work and dedication over two stints on the Tiger sideline.
Clayton began his head coaching career at Todd County Central in 1984 before taking the reins at Hopkinsville from 1986 to 2004. He made stops at Franklin High School and Hillsboro High School in Tennessee before returning in 2017 and retiring after the 2021 season.
He amassed 307 wins as a head coach, including a 195-99 record at Hopkinsville. Clayton enjoyed undefeated regular seasons with the Tigers in 1995 and 2004, and was named 1995 AP Coach of the Year, 3A Coach of the Year in 1996, and was head coach of the Kentucky All-Stars in 1999.
He led teams to four state championship appearances with three schools in Kentucky and Tennessee, ten semi-state appearances, and 16 regional championship appearances.
